In our most recent blog entry, we discussed some of the benefits athletes and weekend warriors alike can see from adding a creatine supplement to their diet. Not only is it a naturally occurring substance in the human body, but using it in supplement form is comparable to taking a branched-chain amino acid supplement. Even with this easily accessible and common knowledge, there is a negative stigma surrounding creatine and those who use it. There is also a laundry list of myths associated with creatine usage as a health and wellness supplement. Today, we want to make sure we debunk some of the common myths surrounding creatine supplements
A Quick Recap
We’ve mentioned it before, but we like to remind everyone what creatine is and what it can do when added into your health and wellness regimen. It is an amino acid, which means it contributes to building muscle and protein synthesis. You will notice a better rate of recovery when taking creatine and a better rate of growth. Creatine also helps your muscles access stores of ATP during anaerobic exercise. This means you will be able to get a little more out of your long jump or push out a couple more reps at a new weight. Creatine has a plethora of healthy benefits that nearly any athlete can utilize.
Crushing These Myths
Our purpose today is to address some common myths about creatine and why they aren’t true. These are only a few of the many myths we have heard in the gym and throughout our fitness journey, but some of the most prominent. We promise that we know what we’re talking about, so if you have any questions after reading what we have below, stop by one of our brick and mortar stores and talk to a member of our knowledgeable staff!
Creatine is a Steroid: All we can do is laugh at this common myth. Anything that leads to muscle growth, especially as the supplement industry began to gain traction, was equated to steroids or other growth hormones. Because it is an amino acid, creatine is not a steroid. Steroids are used to block cortisol hormones in the body and prevent the breakdown of muscle fibers, which makes muscle recovery happen even faster. Creatine is related neither in its chemical structure or its functions to steroids, and is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. These things together make it impossible for creatine to be a steroid.
Creatine’s byproduct, creatinine, is toxic: Creatinine is the byproduct of creatine, created as a result of normal muscle usage and function. For those who are physically active, the more muscular energy they use, the more creatinine is produced. It is also associated with normal kidney function in men and women. Many people used to believe that a measurement of creatinine not sitting around 0.5-1.2 milligrams/deciliters meant the creatine in the body caused kidney issues. In fact, when the readings show numbers outside of this range, it means the kidneys do not function properly, causing higher levels of creatinine to build up in the body. So, when you have a buildup of creatinine in your body, it’s actually helpful in identifying potential issues with your kidneys. Hooray for creatine!
As you can see, creatine is not a harmful chemical, nor will it appear as a steroid in your system during blood or drug tests. It does, however, help you recover and build muscle while harnessing a natural substance, and could even help you and your doctor identify problems with your kidneys.
